DOCTOR WHO is a 45-year old science fiction program originally airing on the BBC. The longevity of the show has to do with certain factors, including its inventive use of its relatively small budget, its enormously rabid fanbase, and the fact that the actors rarely stay on for longer than a few years (the main character himself has been played by ten different actors due to "regeneration").
The Doctor is a 903-year-old (maybe - don't get us started on all the various continuity issues) Time Lord who travels through time and space in his TARDIS. He usually travels with a companion, most of whom are young women.
NewWho
The new DOCTOR WHO, revived after a long hiatus, is often called "NewWho." It is executive produced by QUEER AS FOLK's Russell T. Davies who will step down as executive producer in 2009. He will be replaced by DOCTOR WHO writer Steven Moffat. In the new series, the Doctor's planet Gallifrey and all the other Time Lords were destroyed in the Time War with the Daleks. In the first series of the new series, the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccelston) traveled with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper). In the second series, David Tennant took over as the Tenth Doctor and in the third, Rose was replaced by Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman). In the fourth, Martha in turn was replaced by Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).
DOCTOR WHO also has two current spin-offs: the more adult TORCHWOOD and the younger oriented THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES.
Alien Tech
TARDIS stands for "Time And Relative Dimension In Space" and is the Doctor's time-and-spaceship. The TARDIS' blue police box facade is one of the most recognizable things in the series.
The sonic screwdriver is, after the TARDIS, the most important piece of technology the Doctor has. What it is, exactly, has never really been explained but it does everything from hack computers to reattach barbed wire.
Psychic Paper is used by the Doctor, and others, to gain access to a variety of places. It either shows what the holder wants it to show or what the viewer expects to see.
Enemies
Over its 45 years, the Doctor has accumluated quite a few enemies. Here are some that have shown up in the new series:
- Daleks
- Davros
- Cybermen
- Slitheen
- The Master
- Autons
