Official HBO synopsis
As if juggling three wives weren't tricky enough, Season Two of Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-nominated 'Big Love' finds modern polygamist Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) tackling problems outside his three-house suburban home. As a failed expansion and a suspicious employee entangle his work at Henrickson Home Plus, Bill races to find the person responsible for outing his wife Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn) as a polygamist at Utah's Mother of the Year ceremony. Meanwhile, back at the fundamentalist Juniper Hill compound, prophet Roman Grant (Harry Dean Stanton) sets his sights on Bill's brother Joey (Shawn Doyle) as leverage to regain a share of the family business. Throw a pregnant Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) and an overcompensating Nicki (Chloe Sevigny) into the mix, and Bill won't be getting much sleep at any of his houses. Bold, funny and wholly original, Big Love continues to explore the evolving institution of marriage through this typically atypical family.

What Do They Mean When They Say "Sister Wife"?
It's probably to remind the women that, in theory, they are also deriving companionship from this group marriage. Oh, honey, you're not losing a third of your husband. You're gaining a new wife!
Character Fashions
Whoever is doing wardrobe is having a good time, huh? It appears that the wives all dress differently so we can get big clues as to their upbringing: Barb dresses like someone who was raised to dress modestly, Nicki dresses in clothing that echoes the prairie garb her family wears at Juniper Creek, and Margene dresses like someone who never had to deal with religious guidelines concerning appearance. There's been no explanation given for why the women at Juniper Creek are forced to dress like extras on Little House on the Prairie, but it probably all comes down to religious guidelines specifying what is both "modest" and "feminine." "Attractive" and "individual" clearly have nothing to do with it, and may actually be construed as threatening to a patriarchal cult.
